living the Caribbean dream…

Trading in my New England snow shovel for flip flops and a beach towel, I took a leap of faith and followed my dreams to the Caribbean island of St. Croix. The largest of the three US Virgin Islands, St. Croix is also perhaps the most unassuming. Where St. Thomas has a constant stream of huge cruise ships constantly filling her deep harbor with it’s vast shopping district, hotel chains and clubs, St. Croix has only about thirty ships a year and they only make a brief visit to Frederiksted on the island’s west end. The smallest island, St. John is host to the Caneel Bay Resort and large nature preserve protecting a good portion of the island. The USVI are part of the West Indies Archipelago, known as the Lesser Antilles and are part of the Leeward Islands, 90 miles east of Puerto Rico.

St. Croix is 83 square miles, 23 by 6.5 at its widest part. The main towns are Christiansted and Frederiksted with the rest of the island divided into “estates” harking back to the days of The Dutch sugar cane mills. I live in La Grande Princesse, how perfect is that? Now where did I put that tiara…
